Our Lady Help of Christians School Soup Bus food drive
Our Lady Help of Christians (OLHC) students in Wendouree had a special visit from the Soup Bus today to learn more about its work and hand over food cans generously donated by the children and their families.
The project was organised by OLHC teacher Angelique Greene, who volunteers with the Soup Bus and is herself a fantastic role model within the school community.
“Social justice, compassion and dignity are really important to us at OLHC and we love being able to teach the children through initiatives like this.
‘We had a casual clothes day but instead of inviting the children to bring a gold coin donation, we asked them to bring a can of food for the soup bus pantry instead,” Angelique said.
The food cans are directly supporting local families who are struggling financially, especially in the cost-of-living crisis.
‘While many of the students aren’t fully cognisant of the cost-of-living crisis, they are aware and compassionate,’ Angelique said.
Craig Schepis from the Soup Bus delivered a short educational presentation to the children about the Soup Bus, its history and the importance of connection within our community. The children loved getting on board the bus for a look inside at the set up!
After the short tour, the students removed the cans from the trolleys and put the cans into cardboard boxes for Craig to take away to the Soup Bus pantry. The food donations will be used for families in need in the local Wendouree community.
Our Catholic schools across the diocese do wonderful work to support those less fortunate in their communities and OLHC is certainly no exception. Congrats to all involved !
