Catholic school teachers gather for conference as Auslan grows in prominence
With Auslan becoming an increasingly popular choice of second language for Catholic schools in the Diocese of Ballarat, more than 200 teachers and Deaf community members will come together today (Monday 15th April) for professional learning focusing on promoting inclusion through the Auslan Teachers as Co-Learners (TCL) program.
Auslan TCL provides an innovative pedagogical approach to language learning in Victorian Catholic schools which is underpinned by research in best-practice languages programs and inclusive education programs.
Catholic Education Ballarat Leader of Teaching and Learning, Joe Ewing says 17 Catholic primary schools across the Diocese of Ballarat now offer Auslan as their language program.
‘Learning both English and Auslan – one auditory and one visual language – offers many social, emotional, and educational benefits,’ he says.
‘We know that learning a second language helps students understand how languages work, which leads to improved literacy, critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills.
‘Auslan allows children to not only reap these benefits, but also grow in appreciation of the importance of inclusivity and empathy for people with needs and contexts different to their own.
‘The TCL program also allows deaf students the opportunity to interact with the whole school community, engage with peers, and enjoy full inclusion in the school community through language equality.
‘The program has been developed in respectful consultation with members of the Deaf community.
‘Each TCL Catholic school employs a language assistant, a native signer, and member of the Deaf community, to ensure lessons are culturally sensitive and reflect the language used within the community.
‘Critical to learning Auslan is developing an understanding of its cultural heritage as an Australian language, and this gives learners an opportunity to develop intercultural capabilities, understanding and respect for others.
‘Auslan provides wonderful opportunities for students to grow through engagement with deaf students and members of the Deaf community,’ Mr Ewing said.
Today’s conference aims to provide practical strategies and theoretical understandings to further educate teachers about effective Auslan TCL strategies through a culturally sensitive approach which focuses on deafness as being a part of a cultural and linguistic community.
The conference sessions will include deaf presenters throughout the day, combining hands-on practical activities, knowledge of theory, networking, and opportunities to ask questions to Deaf community members.
